Prolapso uretral em um cão da raça Yorkshire: relato de caso

Abstract

Urethral prolapse is an uncommon disease in dogs characterized by the protusion of the urethral mucosa beyond the penis extremity. It mainly affects young male brachycephalic dogs such as the English Bulldog and the Boston Terrier at the onset of their sexual activity. However, this abnormality has also been reported in breeds such as the Yorkshire Terrier and the long-haired Dachshund. This disorder may be secondarily associated to factors such as excessive sexual arousal, urinary tract infection, masturbation or genetic predisposition, especially in breeds such as the English Bulldog. Dogs with urethral prolapse may have preputial bleeding that intensifies when they become agitated. Diagnosis is made visually by direct inspection and manipulation of the penis where circular eversion of the urethral mucosa will be observed. The treatment of choice is resection and anastomosis of the affected urethral portion. The aim of the present study is to report a case of urethral prolapse in an 8-month-old, unneutered Yorkshire dog, referred for a resection of the exposed urethral portion with subsequent suture of the urethral mucosa to the penile epithelium and bilateral orchiectomy. After 15 days the animal obtained complete healing. The technique employed was effective and easy to perform, where no recurrence was observed in this case.
