Estimativa de carbono armazenado em um reflorestamento do bioma Mata Atlântica

Abstract

The Atlantic Forest is the second largest tropical rainforest on the American continent. Its vegetation regulates the flow of water sources, ensures soil fertility and controls the climate, in addition to acting as a carbon sink. There is a worldwide consensus that strategies should be studied and employed to reduce the concentration of atmospheric CO2, among these strategies, we highlight the reduction of fossil fuel emissions, the reduction of the burning of plant material and the “sequestration” of carbon by the forest planting. The present study aimed to estimate the amount of carbon stored in a reforestation and regeneration area of 0.7 ha, implemented by the Grupo Ambientalista da Bahia (GAMBÁ) at Fazenda Umbuzeiro, Serra da Jiboia, municipality of Elísio Medrado - BA. For data collection, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was used. They were 25 plots of 10x10 m were established in the area, where a total of 917 individuals were registered, distributed in 19 botanical families and 39 species. In 2,500 m2, a biomass of 23.92 t was obtained, that is, 11.96 t of carbon in the sampled area. By extrapolating these values to 1 hectare, biomass corresponds to 95.70 t/ha and carbon corresponds to 47.85 Mg ha. The estimates obtained prove the importance of the Atlantic Forest as carbon sinks, serving as prospects for the development of actions aimed at protecting biodiversity.
